FOBISIA Online Mathematics Competition 2021

Video Challenge

In groups of 3-5, students will create a 3-minute video to explore the evolution of technology through mathematics. The challenge details and scoring rubric will be shared with registered schools on Monday, September 27th, 2021. Final submissions will be due on or before Friday, October 8th, 2021.

Video Challenge Rules

  1. The video competition details will go live on this website on September 27th and videos must be submitted on or before October 8th.

  2. Submissions must be made by uploading the video along with the ‘Video Challenge - FOBISIA Mathematics Competition 2021’ form, which can be found on this website. When complete, send an email to with video as well. Please ensure that student videos are shareable links or added as an attachment.

  3. Videos must stay within the 3-minute time limit. At the 3 minute mark, videos will be stopped by the judge and any information after will not be considered.

  4. Judges will evaluate the video in 3 categories: mathematical knowledge and understanding, creativity, and presentation. See the Video Challenge Scoring Rubric for more details.

  5. Videos must be created, edited, produced and filmed ONLY by the 3-5 students in the group.

  6. Teacher support must be minimal; the project needs to be student led.

  7. The video must contain only ORIGINAL material to avoid copyright issues (including background music).

  8. Video files must be no bigger than 100MB (please compress them before sending if they are).

  9. There is no set specification of video camera; an iPad is perfectly acceptable.

  10. Film in landscape mode.

  11. Finalists’ videos will be made public on this website. Each school must ensure they have permission for students to be featured online. Students do not have to be in the video; screen recording, or other methods (i.e. animation, stop motion) can be used.

  12. Results will be announced on October 22nd.

Video Challenge Guidelines and Scoring Rubric

The video submitted must meet the following requirements in order to qualify for the competition:

  • Video is submitted on or before October 8, 2021.

  • The video must stay within the 3-minute time limit.

  • No copyrighted materials can be used in the video.

  • The video must be appropriate throughout.

  • School video submission must be completed with the ‘Video Challenge - FOBISIA Mathematics Competition 2021’ form.

Videos that meet the requirements will be scored based on:

  • Mathematical knowledge and understanding (40%) - Does the video clearly make the connection between mathematics and the evolution of technology?

  • Creativity (35%) - How well does the video draw in the viewer and keep their attention? Is the video original and innovative?

  • Presentation (25%) - What is the overall quality of production (including visual and sound elements)?
